Auckland’s best dating spots for teenagers

When it comes to dating, your teen may not be choosing you as their go-to for advice, but have no doubt, it’ll be a mix of excitement and nerves! Sorting out the perfect date venue might just “make-or-break” the date, so here’s a list of date spots in Auckland you might like surreptitiously to send their way.

SNACK-NIC

Pack a teen-inspired snack picnic and head to One Tree Hill, Victoria Park or Mission Bay. One Tree Hill is a beautiful place to walk the dog with your date and warm up with a hot choccie in the café afterwards. Victoria Park has a skate park if that’s more how you roll and there’s plenty of grass around to lay out your picnic rug, or you could walk to the city to check out the Art Gallery or Albert Park. Alternatively, Mission Bay is a wonderful place for a romantic stroll along the waterfront (you could even hire a bike or rollerblades!), followed by a picnic on the beach (or if you prefer a sand-free zone, there’s plenty of room on Selwyn Reserve) enjoying the million dollar views of Rangitoto Island. If you’re looking for good snack ideas, then consider dips and crackers, sushi, homemade mini cookies, and chocolate.

WATERFALLS

There is a special sort of magic about a waterfall, and Auckland is a native wonderland with waterfalls sprinkled throughout, so “do” go chasing waterfalls. And if you don’t like salt water in your eyes, then waterfalls are the perfect place to swim. Many waterfalls also have breathtaking views and scenic walks which make for the perfect date adventure. To see a few of Auckland’s top waterfalls here.

LIVE MUSIC

There’s always a cool vibe around music events, so even if it’s not a gig, there are plenty of music-related things going on in Auckland, from free concerts to music festivals, open mic nights and live music in cafes. Often these are fairly cheap (we’re talking broke teens here) and relaxed, which makes for an easy night out with atmosphere. Check out Eventfinda, Auckland Council, Facebook events, and your local surf bar/café for more events. If you are confident in front of the mic then an open mic night or karaoke could be really fun but even if you’re not, there are plenty of options for you and your date to find something to listen to and enjoy.

PARADISE ICE SKATING

Excuse the pun but if you are trying to break the ice a little, then Paradice is the perfect excuse to hold hands and help each other balance. This date option is also full of opportunities to make a complete goof of yourself and take hilarious snaps of each other, I think we can all relate to this one. Locations for Paradise Ice skating are in Avondale or Botany. However Aotea Square also has an ice-skating rink open for one month a year (usually between June-July.)

DAY/ NIGHT MARKETS

Auckland has some seriously great markets these days. Whether you’re in the mood for dumplings, chop suey, pastries, jewellery, cheap clothes or a nice gift, markets are a treasure trove. AUCKLAND BEACHES

Auckland beaches are the perfect place to chill out, relax, and enjoy the sunshine! If you are nervous about being alone with your date, get some friends together – this is a great group date option as it gives you the perfect opportunity to sit and talk in a casual group situation, and test the waters (both meanings intended) without the pressure of a one-on-one date. If you and your date like swimming or surfing, this could also be the perfect opportunity to get some exercise and show off those skills! Check out some of the best beaches here.

SPORTY ACTIVITIES

Auckland has an abundance of rock climbing, laser tag, bowling, arcades and mini golf locations which are ideal for those individuals who can’t sit still. These type of dates create an exciting fun-filled atmosphere and the healthy competition between individuals can help relieve nervousness. These options are also perfect for group dates, double dates or even a birthday party (where you have a good excuse to invite someone you are interested in dating).

BIKE RIDES

Roll up to your date’s house in style, or meet your date at one of Auckland’s top bike trails. This date idea is free, and the fresh air and exercise should help you loosen up and get those endorphins going for the rest of the date! MISSION: POSSIBLE

Friend’s birthday coming up, need something for a hobby, or just wanting some new clothes? No worries, take your date to Sylvia Park! Sylvia Park is a great location for a mission-style date as it has an abundance of shops to look at and many tantalising food places, or you could even go see a movie, which provides some easy entertainment and can give you both something to talk about afterwards. And if that chemistry just isn’t there but you got so me shopping done, then at least you spent your afternoon doing something constructive, right?

THRIFT SHOP

Want to pop some tags but only got $20 in your pocket? Forget The Warehouse, Auckland has some amazing thrift shops. Hunting for clothes with someone you like gives you the perfect opportunity to get to know them, and their personal style, as well as working on your own. It can also be fun to try on outrageous outfits and show each other for a bit of a laugh. Afterwards you can feel satisfied with your purchases and can spend your remaining money on a nice lunch or afternoon tea together. Recycle Boutique, Paper Bag Princess and The White Elephant are all great options as they are located in and around the city, and have an eclectic range of clothing, starting from as little as $2.
