Welcome to survival mode! It feels like none of us can escape the increasing cost of living, which is really hurting, particularly when you have a family and maybe only one income.

If you’re finding it tough to afford even the basics due to rising costs, then you’re not alone. Now is the time to spend less without making too many sacrifices.

WHAT COSTS ARE AFFECTING PEOPLE THE MOST?

Food, utilities, rent, interest rates, petrol, and additional school related costs are all on the rise. Many of us won’t even consider booking any holidays this year. Saving money is about focussing on the low hanging fruit (the big wins!), so we’ve looked at some inescapable expenses for most families, where it’s possible to make some decent savings.

  • Property maintenance
  • Health and medical
  • Petrol
  • Insurance
  • Sports gear
  • Stationery

HAVE YOU CONSIDERED JOINING A COMMUNITY-BASED ORGANISATION THAT CAN HELP?

Manchester Unity is New Zealand’s largest friendly society, a collective of members who support each other. Through their membership, you would be eligible for significant discounts on useful everyday items and even some things to treat yourself!

We’ve been trialing Manchester Unity to see how their $8 (per month) membership can help us. This seems like such a great option, and current members are blown away by the payback for such a tiny outlay.

In our trial, we wanted to see how relevant the Manchester Unity membership discounts are for families, and how quickly those discounts can pay off the membership fee and allow us to really start saving.

HERE’S WHAT WE LEARNT FROM THE TRIAL.

We quickly saved the membership fee back, and a lot more on top.

We downloaded the Manchester Unity App which shows all the discounts at popular retailers like Bunnings, Big Save Furniture, Repco, Beaurepaires… the list goes on (including petrol, sports gear and insurance providers).

The discounts on offer gave us anywhere up to 50% off some regular expenses, and quite a few luxury items. And, you can get $9 movie tickets! This kept us ahead of the game in terms of the average rate of inflation.

Members also have access to fantastic family holidays with cheap holiday homes (think a two-bedroom house in Queenstown for $460 a week!), online games, education grants and much more!

Having access to these savings through a membership, definitely eases the sting of weekly spending.

HERE’S HOW OTHER PARENTS WHO WERE KEEN TO SAVE MONEY HAVE MANAGED TO REDUCE THEIR OUTGOINGS

“We needed a new kettle. The sticker price was $150 but it was on sale for $75. Using our Manchester Unity discount card, we got it even cheaper at just $55!” ~ Brooke, Wellington

“We saved over $200 on a rental car at Thrifty Rentals in Dunedin by using the discount code. Thank you, Manchester Unity. So grateful for that!” ~ Susan, Wellington

“We are expecting our third child, so we need to purchase another kid’s bed. After looking at a few prices on one of the mattresses I realised we could get a discount through Manchester Unity if we purchased at Big Save Furniture. In the end we were able to buy the “fancy” mattress for the price of the mid-range one, saving $279. Whoop whoop!” ~ Rebecca, Taranaki

“For our bathroom renovation we purchased a shower tray from Bunnings, used my discount App and instead of paying $652 I paid only $394.50, saving $257.50!” ~ Anon

“We love skiing, but our teenagers keep growing out of their gear, which is so expensive. We managed to kit out our two 17-year-olds with two great quality ski jackets and one pair of ski pants for $324.85, saving an amazing $415.98. It was incredible.” ~ MariaAuckland
