Fantastic Gymnastics Game: Get into the swing of things

Older kids (8+) will love the challenge of Fantastic Gymnastics, a game where the object is to flip the gymnast around the high bar, let him fly, and stick the landing – literally.

What is it: Fantastic Gymnastics Game is a deceptively simple game which will keep older kids interested as they try to master the technique to get the perfect landing. Players time their speed and rhythm to gain momentum to flip the gymnast figure around the high bar. At the right moment, hit the release button to let him fly, and try to stick the perfect landing. Get him to land on the mat on his feet for the win! Play solo, head-to-head, or challenge friends to a tournament. Step-by-step instruction sheet also features tips for getting the perfect 100-point score.

How it works: Place the gymnast by snapping his hands onto the high bar, facing the landing mat. Press the yellow button slowly, and then faster as he picks up speed. Press and hold the red button to release the gymnast and send him flying. It sounds easy, but it takes some trial and error to work out the rhythm of pressing the button. The gymnast can land in one of three zones to gain points – green for 100 points (perfect landing), yellow for 50 points, and red for 25 points. If the gymnast has a crash landing, 0 points are awarded. There’s a tournament bracket included so players can track who has the highest number of points and advance through to the next round. Or you can just try to beat high scores and track who wins each round.

Our editor says: Fantastic Gymnastics is frustrating at first, until you start to get the hang of when and how to press the button – we found it most effective when the gymnast’s legs were in a backswing position. And then it’s addictive. We just couldn’t stop trying to get that elusive perfect landing on the green spot of the landing mat! The gymnast has velcro on his feet, so he literally sticks to the mat, and our kids loved watching him land wherever (sometimes wobbling, sometimes falling over completely, and sometimes “sticking” the landing). The game reminds me, in a delightful way, of one of those vintage wooden acrobat or gymnast toys, where you squeeze the parallel bars to make the figure swing around the string.
