Create your own: Driftwood odd bunch

driftwood odd bunch craft

With patience, paint and a bit of imagination, driftwood, tree branches and other everyday objects can be transformed into colourful works of art to brighten any kids’ room.

On walks along the beach keep a look out for bits of driftwood. An interesting shape, smoothed and weathered by the sea, can be a thing of beauty in itself. Smaller pieces can be put together to make sculptures. Gather some pieces and when you get them home, look at each piece of wood, turning it this way and that—you may see the head of an alien in one piece, a pair of legs in another. Start placing bits together to make a figure or animal. Each one will have a character of its own and be totally unique.

You will need:

  • Pieces of driftwood
  • Glue
  • Acrylic paint in assorted colors
  • Paintbrush
  • String or rope

step 1.

Play around with different bits of wood until you are happy with your arrangement. Glue the pieces of wood together. You may have to hold them in position for a few moments as the glue dries.driftwood

step 2.

Apply a base coat of white acrylic paint, or another color, to your design and let dry before adding further colors on top.driftwood

step 3.

Use acrylic paints to paint on the eyes and mouth. Use bright colors to paint the body. I think it looks good to leave some of the wood showing.driftwood

step 4.

You can use any string or rope that you may have found for arms or legs. Glue in position and let dry before you play with your odd bunch creature.
