How to commemorate Anzac Day from home

Homemade poppies for Anzac Day

With all the ANZAC day services and parades cancelled, we’ve put together a list of how you and your family can pay tribute from home.

RSA’s #Stand At Dawn

For those who usually attend the dawn service, the RSA and New Zealand Defence Force are inviting everyone to stand at your letterbox, front door, in your lounge room, balconies, in your driveway, where ever you are in your bubble to take a moment and commemorate our servicemen and women. The service starts at 6:00AM on Saturday 25th April live on Radio New Zealand.

Make a poppy

In lieu of buying a poppy, why not make one instead. Both the Auckland Museum and RSA have tutorials on how to make your own poppy at home from felt, or egg cartons as well as knitted poppies and crochet poppies.

Decorate your letterbox

If you decide to make some poppies,  you could get even more creative and decorate your letterbox. The RSA are running a competition and the best-decorated letterbox wins a prize. Just share your letterbox creation on Facebook or Instagram with the #standatdawn to be in the draw.

Lay a virtual poppy

Instead of laying a physical poppy for a family member, the Auckland War Memorial Museum allows you to lay a virtual poppy on their Roll of Honour record in their online cenotaph.

Bake ANZAC biscuits

ANZAC biscuits are an absolute staple on ANZAC day, so why not make some of your own. The Edmonds cookbook always has a good recipe or the RSA has another good one. Or if biscuits aren’t really your thing, then these ANZAC squares are delicious too.

ANZAC Salute: Live in your Living Room

The Royal New Zealand Ballet will be performing an Anzac Salute: Live in your Living Room, via their Facebook page at 10.30am, 1.30pm and 7.30pm. The two works, Dear Horizon and Passchendaele, were commissioned for their Salute programme in 2015 and performed live with the New Zealand Army Band, to commemorate the centenary of the Gallipoli landings.

Music From The Home Front

As ANZAC Day commorations were cancelled across Australia and New Zealand, musicians on both sides of the Tasman have teamed up for an online concert called Music From The Home Front. Musicians including The Wiggles, Jimmy Barnes, Delta Goodrem and Dave Dobbyn will all be performing, catch the concert live on THREE at 9:30 PM NZST.

Let’s celebrate this special day!
