Buggy-friendly walks in Auckland

In Auckland, families are unbelievably lucky to have a lush green city full of native bush, waterfalls and coastal beauty. Mount Eden Circuit Walk

Location: 250 Mount Eden Road, Mount Eden

Time: 40 minutes  

Living in Auckland, sometimes the hustle and bustle can be overwhelming. So take some much-needed time out, grab a friend, and tackle the Mount Eden Circuit Walk with the children. This is a light walk up one of Auckland’s most famous volcano craters, perfect for parents of all fitness levels. This walk is buggy-friendly and dog-friendly, too, with wide paths all the way to the top. It’s also ideal for little children who are determined to walk by themselves (although you might want to bring the pram along just in case they get tired halfway up!). Enjoy the truly amazing 360° views of Auckland when you’ve reached the top. The walk isn’t too crowded, which is a bonus for parents with younger children. Afterwards, go grab a bite to eat at Mount Eden village, which is packed with cafés and bakeries.

Oratia Stream Loop Walk

Location: Millbrook Road Esplanade, Sunnyvale

Time: 1 hour   

Oratia Stream walk connects to the Millbrook Road and Lower Waikumete cycle paths/walkways at Serwayne Place. This is a buggy-friendly walk, and dogs are also allowed, with off-leash exercise areas within the reserve. As you walk along, you will stumble across Millbrook Edible Garden, a community vegetable garden and fruit orchard. Flood mosaics and tiled artwork add a creative aspect to the walk, representing the flooding of the houses that used to be on the site. Oratia Farmers’ Market is open 9am to noon every Saturday, located at 99 Parrs Cross Road. You can find coffee, breakfast, fresh produce, live music, and an amazing atmosphere after your morning walk.

Orewa Te Ara Tahuna Shared Path Walk

Location: 214E Hibiscus Coast Hwy, Orewa

Time: 1.5 hours  

This is one of those walks that will leave you with a sense of accomplishment and feeling great. Located north of Auckland, this cycle path/walkway is a wonderful place to take the children to enjoy some time out of the house and burn some energy. You’ll expect to see beautiful houses, gardens, wildlife, the ocean, and stunning nature. Picnic tables are located at the Orewa end, so bring along a packed lunch and relax with a bite to eat afterwards. The walkway is mostly concreate, making it buggy-friendly and great for the younger children starting out riding their bikes. Halfway through the walk, there are public toilets, a coffee lounge, and other shops located at the Millwater Parkway shops. If the weather is appropriate, bring along togs and towels to jump in the water with the kids.

Pakuranga Rotary Shared Path Walkway

Location: 10 Aylesbury St, Pakuranga, Auckland 

Time: 40 minutes  

Taking some time out as parents is necessary, and it’s a great idea to get out the pram and take your baby for some fresh air while you get some refreshing light exercise. Located in Pakuranga, this is a fully paved route and part of a 9km pathway stretching from Pigeon Mountain in Farm Cove down to the Panmure Bridge. It’s safe for cycling, jogging, walking and buggies; perfect for any family outing. Picnic areas, an off-leash dog exercise area, and a playground are just some things this walk has to offer. The beach borders the walkway path, making for a beautiful view while walking along with family or friends.

Botanic Gardens and Puhinui Stream Forest Trail

Location: 102 Hill Road, The Gardens, Auckland

Time: 1 hour 15 minutes  

Opening hours: Auckland Botanic Gardens 8am to 8pm (Summer), 8am to 6pm (Winter)

Café Miko 8am to 4pm daily

This is a two-in-one walk, perfect for a family day out with the kids. Puhinui Stream Forest Trail links the native forest walking tracks between Totara Park and the Auckland Botanic Gardens. Along the tranquil 4km walk, there are many stops to keep the children entertained and places for you to take a break and enjoy the surroundings too. Picnic spots, children’s playground areas, an off-leash dog exercise area, and a mountain bike track are some of the things offered on this walk. Expect to see lush forests and native trees throughout the trail, making this one for the nature lovers. After the walk, take the children to the Botanic Gardens where they can play in the Potter Children’s Garden. And check out Miko Café to relax and grab a bite to eat.
